     Welcome to the PEP website!

  1008

It gives me great pleasure to announce PEP's first purchase of an "endangered" historic structure.  The former Christian Science Church, 1008 Michigan Avenue, built circa 1893, and remodeled in 1920 in Colonial Revival style by famed local architect George Allen, is now safe! The stately Parthenon-like structure was a site on the 2006 Candlelight Tour and again in 2009 for our Candlelight Celebration. It's your support of our Candlelight Tours, in part, that allowed us to do this!

We have a lot of work ahead of us, including putting on a new roof before winter, getting the systems up and running, restoring windows, and painting the building next spring (in historic colors, of course).  Most importantly, the building will have a covenant placed upon it, which will protect it from demolition forever.

In order to meet our restoration objective, we are announcing a Campaign to Restore 1008 Michigan. We seek your interest and involvement, in the form of monetary donations towards the project (fully tax deductible), in-kind contributions of materials for the renovation, and/or volunteer labor.  Please contact us at our email address peplaporte@yahoo.com, mail to People Engaged in Preservation at P.O. Box 853, LaPorte, IN 46350 or bring it with you when you visit 1008 Michigan!  Truly, your labor, donation, and/or membership in PEP will make all the difference.
